Generally, a loft conversion for a house is considered to be a ‘permitted development. A roofline conversion, for instance, doesn’t involve significant change to your roof, and a dormer conversion doesn’t extend your roof beyond the height of your property or any outside wall. However, there is a limit of 40 cubic metres of additional roof space for terraced houses, and 50 for detached or semi-detached houses.
Understandably, it’s difficult to visualise exactly how much space this is. If you’re unsure whether your loft conversion will fall under permitted development, then we’ll quickly be able to let you know. Plus, in any instance where planning permission is required, we’re happy to sort out all the paperwork on your behalf, as part of our project
management service.
If planning permission is required, this is unlikely to delay the build of your loft conversion by more than eight weeks. When we first visit your home, conduct a free site survey, and discuss what you’d like to do with your loft, we’ll almost instantly ascertain whether planning permission is required. If required, we’ll submit a planning application to your local authority, who then process the concept project internally.
This can include advertising the application locally, usually on the council’s website, and other members of the public have several weeks to comment or ask questions about your proposal. In the majority of circumstances, all applications are approved within this time frame. As soon as you’ve been given the go ahead, we’ll let you know when the work will begin.
With extensive experience in the business, we’re used to submitting planning applications for even the most complex loft conversions. Knowing how to detail the plans, and approach your local authority, we can ensure that your application isn’t going to be unnecessarily delayed.
Giving you more time to prepare your home for the build, and spend less time completing paperwork, we dedicate ourselves to easing the pressure on you throughout every project. However, if you’ve already got planning permission for your loft conversion, or know that it won’t be required, then you’re ready to get started on the project. The next step is to give us a call at the number above, or complete the contact form below, and we’ll take care of the rest.
